I am not a slave to my email. Some days I only check it once per day. If I was in a profession where it would be purposeful to have IM, I could see using it. Right now, I think the only one I would instant message is my daughter, and I am sure that she would not be interested in what I had to say when she is messaging her friends.
I have seen it work for those who are working at a job where it would be important to keep up with others. For me, I do not see it working. For kids in the media center, no, IM is not the way to
